PR: Bowmore Unveils Tempest Small Batch Release No. 2

The Second in a Series of Bowmore Small Batch Releases, Tempest is the First to Launch in the U.S.

ISLAY, SCOTLAND – Inspired by the violent gales that at times wage war against its weather-beaten distillery, Bowmore® is proud to introduce Bowmore Tempest Small Batch Release No. 2, the second in a series of small batch releases from the first distillery on this magical island of Islay. And while this Tempest is Bowmore’s second small batch release, it will be the first to be sold on American shores. Production of this Bowmore Tempest – which embodies the spirit of the beautiful and rugged island home of Islay – is limited to only 2,000 cases, and 200 of those precious cases will arrive in the US in December 2010. The suggested retail price will be $100.00.

Aged for a decade in first fill Bourbon casks, Bowmore Tempest has a warm gold color, and a nose of dry peat smoke that invites closer inspection. The first sip delivers bursts of citrus followed by a backbone of smokiness and a sea salt tang. Bowmore Tempest is an extremely complex expression of Islay Scotch yet it adheres to the Bowmore signature style that sets it apart from its neighbors – balance. Sipping a dram of Tempest transports the Scotch lover to the shores of Islay and the cool, dark cellars of Bowmore’s legendary No. 1 vaults, located below sea level, where this whisky rested and matured for 10 years. The distillery is beaten by the wild waves off Loch Indaal, the unbridled tempest that has fought against the Bowmore distillery herself since its creation in 1779. The people of Islay are no strangers to the tempest, and the powerful weather of Islay challenges its people as well as the Bowmore distillers, who have a raw passion for creating fine Scotch.

Bowmore Tempest is a true expression of the unique Scottish island of Islay, the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides that sits off the West Coast of Scotland. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Islay has a population of only some 3,000 hardy souls, yet no fewer than eight distilleries call it home. Nature fights on Islay, where the mellow, warming influence of the Gulf Stream contrasts with the bone quaking winter storms that drive the ocean spray far inland where it washes over Islay’s peaty soil, imbuing the entire island with the taste of the sea. For this reason the Scotch whisky of Islay is some of the most robust – yet rewarding – found anywhere on earth.

* Color Warm gold
* Nose Dry peat smoke perfectly balanced by delicious zesty lemon pepper
* Palate Initial burst of lemon pepper following by the signature Bowmore peaty sea-salt tang; the citrus returns at the end adding balance and complexity to the mouthfeel
* Finish Fresh lemon pepper

Bowmore Tempest Small Batch Release No. 2 (56% ABV) arrives in the U.S. this December and can be found at retailers nationwide at a suggested retail price of $100.00 for a 750ml bottle. The first bottling of Bowmore Tempest was released last year in the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia and Canada.

Founded in 1779, Bowmore is the oldest Distillery on Islay. Islay malts are famous for their characteristic smokiness and Bowmore is no exception; we carefully smoke our malt and use skills handed down from generation to generation to craft a perfectly balanced Single Malt. Bowmore’s adherence to traditional production methods helps to shape the character of our single malts. We’re one of only a few distilleries anywhere which still produces its own floor malted barley, hand-turned by traditional wooden malt shovels. For our whiskies we draw water from the Laggan River, with its rich peaty overtones, and it’s the same Islay peat that fires the malt drying kiln.

Bowmore Distillery’s close proximity to the sea is also vital in determining the final character of our spirit. The famous Bowmore No. 1 vaults is where most of our whiskies spend their long lives resting quietly in the cool, dark, damp cellars below sea level, oblivious to the waves thrashing the vault’s sea-facing wall. They mature in oak casks, previously used for bourbon, sherry or claret, gradually developing rich and mellow flavors. It’s this combination of peat, barley, sea breeze, water, wood, people and tradition that together create the perfectly balanced warm and smoky character of Bowmore single malt whiskies.

The award-winning Bowmore portfolio includes Bowmore Legend, 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old Darkest, 18 Year Old and 25 Year Old in addition to special limited-edition bottlings such as Bowmore Black, White, Gold and Bowmore 40 Year Old. Bowmore is available nationwide in the U.S. and in more than 45 countries worldwide. The Bowmore portfolio is imported to the U.S. by Skyy Spirits, LLC.

Kahlua Releases Limited Edition Seasonal Flavor

Kahlúa, the world’s original and number one selling coffee liqueur, is once again expanding its family of premium offerings this holiday season with the debut of limited edition Kahlúa® Peppermint Mocha. Kahlúa Peppermint Mocha combines two of the season’s best loved flavors to offer consumers a new way to enjoy the delicious taste of Kahlúa while providing retailers an opportunity to increase category profitability during the most critical selling period of the year.

Kahlúa Peppermint Mocha is a luxurious balance of 100% Arabica coffee beans shade-grown in the Veracruz region of Mexico, combined with cool peppermint and the decadent taste of dark chocolate derived from the finest cocoa beans. The result, says Andy Nash, Marketing Director for Kahlúa at Pernod Ricard USA, is a seasonally inspired and superior-tasting coffee experience like no other. Kahlúa Peppermint Mocha can be enjoyed neat, over ice or in favorite hot cocoa and coffee drinks.

“The combination of Kahlúa’s legendary coffee taste with the cool bite of peppermint and rich creaminess of dark chocolate results in this deliciously indulgent liqueur,” said Nash. ”Given Kahlúa’s long history of producing authentic coffee liqueurs of outstanding quality, consumers and retailers alike can be assured that Kahlúa Peppermint Mocha has true coffee credentials and taste, not just a hint of coffee flavor.”

Consumer research conducted by Kahlúa indicates that consumers find Kahlúa Peppermint Mocha to be a very favorable addition to the Kahlúa portfolio and to the repertoire of holiday drink options for the coming season. Consumers overwhelmingly agreed that Peppermint Mocha stands out as a unique offering that is ‘just right for the holiday season’ while staying true to the Kahlúa character and Kahlúa’s core offering: bold flavors and smooth, delicious taste.

Nash added, “The October through December months are the most critical selling period for flavored liqueurs when sales can be as much as four times that of the balance of the year. This holiday season Kahlúa is increasing investment to support retail sales growth of the limited edition Kahlúa Peppermint Mocha as well as the full family of Kahlúa Coffee Liqueur products. Kahlúa is supporting the limited release of Kahlúa Peppermint Mocha with custom-designed merchandising and POS materials and sampling where legal.

Kahlúa Peppermint Mocha (20% ABV) will be available at retail October 1 through December 31 and will retail for a suggested price of $17.99/750ml.

Woodford Reserve Releases Limited Edition Maple Wood Finished Bourbon

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Nov. 1, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Woodford Reserve announces the latest extension of its acclaimed Master’s Collection which will be released on November 1. Called ‘Maple Wood Finish,’ it is the fifth in the series of limited edition bottlings and continues Woodford Reserve’s tradition of crafting rare whiskeys that extend the category in bold new directions.

This whiskey is one of the most unique Master’s Collections to date as it is the industry’s first bourbon to be finish-aged in barrels made from sugar maple wood. Barrels play a key role in producing bourbon, with approximately 70 percent of the spirit’s flavor and aroma and all of its color provided by the barrel. Woodford Reserve’s new offering features bourbon finish-aged in uniquely crafted barrels made of maple wood, something never before done in the industry.

“Sugar maple trees have a complex natural chemistry, rich in calcium, potassium and other minerals, but they are best known for their flavorful sap which contains as much as 3% sugar,” said Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Chris Morris. “Though it was thought that whiskey barrels could not be crafted from sugar maple wood, our Brown-Forman Cooperage has done just that. Of all the distillers in our industry, we are the only bourbon company that crafts its own barrels, giving us unique knowledge and control of the process. The Master’s Collection Maple Wood Finish uniquely finish-ages Woodford Reserve in a toasted, not charred, maple wood barrel, resulting in a whiskey enhanced with hints of maple, honey and cinnamon.”

Ever year, one of the five sources of flavor is changed for the Master’s Collection expressions. These five sources – grain, water, fermentation, distillation, and wood-aging – are unique to bourbon whiskey, and altering just one of them creates a totally new flavor profile.

“Bourbon must be matured in new, charred oak barrels, and in our quest to fully understand the contribution oak wood makes to bourbon, we have studied other Kentucky hardwoods as well,” said Wayne Rose, brand director for Woodford Reserve. “This has led to some exciting discoveries and innovative barrel finish concepts. One of these – Maple Wood Finish – is a first for the spirits industry and has resulted in an amazing, elegant whiskey.”

Maple Wood Finish is the fifth in the Woodford Reserve Master’s Collection series following the Four Grain, Sonoma-Cutrer Finish, Sweet Mash and Seasoned Oak offerings. Released periodically at the master distiller’s discretion, the Master’s Collection whiskeys are extremely limited in quantity and bottled only once, in a proprietary package inspired by the copper pot stills of The Woodford Reserve Distillery.

The inspiration for the Master’s Collection is rooted in the rich history and tradition of what is today known as The Woodford Reserve Distillery. In the mid-1800s distillery owner Oscar Pepper and Master Distiller James Crow studied and recommended use of key processes like sour mashing and charred barrel maturation at the historic Woodford County distillery. These practices are still maintained in the bourbon industry, and today the distillery receives more than 100,000 visitors annually and is the only one in America to use bourbon triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills.”

Woodford Reserve Maple Wood Finish will be sold in 45 U.S. markets, and a limited quantity will be available in Canada, the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Germany, New Zealand and Australia. Each bottle is individually hand-numbered and presented at 94.4 proof. Available in major metro markets, only 1,676 cases are available with a suggested retail price of $89.99 for a 750ml bottle.
