Cocktail of the Week: Afternoon Delight

…..This weeks return of cocktail of the week comes with one of my favorite fruity summer drinks to sip on. Great choice for get together as well for relaxing on a summer afternoon and with summer almost over, this would be a great time to take advantage of it. This recipe is actually my adaptation of a recipe courtesy of one of Hawaii’s hottest mixologists, Amie Fujiwara. I personally like a bit stronger taste in my drinks, feel free to use my version, the original, or make it to YOUR taste.

Afternoon Delight:
2 oz Absolut Mandarin (Original recipe calls for 1 1/2 oz)
1 oz Passion Fruit
1 oz Cranberry
1/2 oz Sweet n Sour (Original recipe calls for 1 oz)
1 tsp Passion Fruit concentrate
2 slices of Lime
3 Slices of Orange
Splash of Seven up

…..Muddle two slices of orange and the two slices of lime in a mixing glass. Then add your ingredients; vodka, juices, sour mix and concentrate. Shake and then pour into a either a Martini glass or a Collins glass, your choice. Top off with your 7 up and garnish with your last slice of orange. Enjoy.

Review: Last Round Hangover Support

…..The Hangover… it’s not just the title to one of my favorite movies of all time, it’s every social drinkers worst nightmare. And after a long night of drinking, networking and socializing it’s the last thing you want to wake up with in the morning. For those of us that drink on the regular, we’ve heard it all and tried it all when looking for cures to the common hangover. Eat more, drink water, rest, avoid mixing types of alcohol, avoid cheaper alcohols etc. The problem is most of us know what things to do AFTER a hangover has already crept up rather then what to do to PREVENT it. Or even worse, we feed into myths rather than facts on how to cure it. As a proud member of the “I’ve only had one hangover EVER” club, I make it a point to take as many precautions to avoid getting a hangover as possible. That being said when I heard of a product out there using all natural ingredients that you could drink before going to bed BEFORE the hangover sets in, I just knew I had to try it. Last Round Hangover Support comes to you from Herbasway, the fine makers of several liquid dietary supplements and features a combination of all natural herbal extracts such as Kudzu, Stevia, green tea, and licorice. While most of us are familiar with licorice, green tea, and the stevia(sugar) plant, it’s the lessor known Kudzu that’s the star of this how. It’s claim to fame is being able to reduce cravings for alcohol.

….. I was lucky enough to receive a goodies package from the fine folks over at Last Round complete with a drinking cup, some beer pong balls and a cool poster (Thanks Guys!), but the toughest part was finding a good night to give it a try. As fate should have it, a drinking festival hit my town last weekend where myself and the Mrs. were able to finally let loose. One of the biggest worries I had when preparing myself to down the 2.4 oz bottle of liquid “get out of jail free card” was that it would either A) have a horrible taste, B) have a horrible odor, or C) All of the above. To my surprise it featured a sweet/sugary odor and a taste that resembled green tea which for me was a plus. So what’s the verdict; After a night of drinking about 6 to 8 (strong) margaritas and 3 or 4 tequila shots, with very little to eat, I woke up feeling about as good as if I had just slept 10 hours on a bed of feathers. I felt rested, and saw no lingering affects of a night of careless drinking. Success !

Price: $2.99/Bottle

Grade: A+

…..If you’re still not convinced, unable to get a hold of a bottle, or flat out just don’t want to give it a try, you can always check out my post on other Hangover Remedies to help you next time you’re out. As always don’t forget to tell your friends about us and “Like” us on Facebook. Till next time, class dismissed.

“After Midnight” Bars Courtesy of Playboy Magazine

Do you like to travel? Who doesn’t? If you’re like me, the first thing you do when you plan a trip is start looking for some of the best hot spots to visit while in town. With so many contradicting search engine reviews out there to keep you guessing, who better to trust than Playboy Magazine. The editors over at playboy have put together for you a who’s who list of bars to check out entitled “After Midnight”. Not surprisingly, many of their picks are located in the “usual suspects” of major cities such as New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. If none of these places ring a bell or better yet they do but you have yet to check them out, don’t feel bad neither have I and yet I still have had some amazingly interesting “after midnight” bar experiences. The list includes :

  • Atlanta: The Highlander
  • Boston: The Franklin
  • Chicago: The Green Mill
  • Dallas: Rio Room
  • Hollywood: Jumbos Clown Room
  • Las Vegas: Double Down Saloon
  • Memphis: Mollie Fontaine Lounge
  • Miami Beach: Mac’s Club Deuce
  • New Orleans: The Club Ms. Mae’s
  • New York City: Mister H
  • Portland, Ore.: Gold Dust Meridian
  • San Francisco: The Endup
  • Tampa: The Hub
  • Washington D.C.: Jimmy Valentine’s
As a former resident of Chicago (Born & Raised), it was a little disappointing to only see one bar on the list given the ridiculous night life the city has, but even I know that it would be impossible to create a list like this AND please everyone. Now as a resident of Central Florida I did appreciate seeing some Tampa love in there with the Hub. Do you have a favorite place you feel got snubbed? Let them know, or better yet let me know so I can check it out and agree/disagree with you. For the list as well as a bit of info on each establishment be sure to visit Playboy Online. Until next time, Class Dismissed.

Review: MargaritaFEST 2011

…..It was the best of times, it was the worst of times (for those that don’t know their limit), it was the return of MargaritaFEST to Orlando’s downtown district known as Wall Street Plaza. Was it hot as hell? Yes, after all this is Florida in the month of August with a block party atmosphere which means you’re standing shoulder to shoulder with people. Was it unbearable? Absolutely not, in fact it was a slightly breezy and very overcast day that threatened rain but actually held off until literally minutes after the event ended. If that wasn’t a sign from up above that we were meant to drink and enjoy ourselves I don’t know what was. As advertised their were two full bars, 10-15 booths serving unlimited classic and unique margaritas, and several tequila sampling tables both public and private. Oh and did I mention munchies and some great reggae cover bands? It was definitely a night to remember, and with the help of a bottle of “Last Round” hangover remedy, I was spared a rough Sunday morning. Below are a few of the margarita recipes I liked best. Some I tweaked a bit to my own liking. Cheers!

(Photos Courtesy of Whats2hot.com)

 Pomegranate Margarita

  • 2 1/2 oz. PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur
  • 1 oz. Herradrra Reposado Tequila
  • 1/2 oz. Triple Sec
  • Splash Lime Juice
  • Splash Simple Syrup
Super Fruit Margarita
  • Half a (750 mL) bottle VeeV Açaí Spirit
  • 5 oz 901 Blanco tequila
  • 7 oz Fresh lime juice
  • 5 oz Simple syrup (1 part sugar, 1 part water)
Classic Milagro Margarita
  • 2 Parts Milagro Silver
  • 3/4 Parts Agave Nectar
  • 1 Part Fresh Lime Juice
…..The best thing about a margarita is they are very hard to mess up. You can make them as sweet or as strong as you like. Make them as fruity or as tart as you prefer. These were some of my favorites, feel free to experiment with the basics of a margarita (Tequila, Lime, Sugar) and add in some of your favorites and see where it takes you. Until, next time; Class dismissed.
